Striker Louis Saha has been told he is free to leave the Stadium of Light before his contract expires, if he can find another club.

The 34 year-old French striker has found opportunities hard to come by since signing a one-year contract last summer and is yet to start a Premier League match.

Saha has grown disillusioned at the lack of chances given to him by Martin O’Neill with Connor Wickham moving ahead of him in the pecking order as backup to Steven Fletcher.

Indeed, Saha’s only starts for the club were in the Capital One Cup ties against MK Dons and Middlesbrough, and his last appearance for the Lads was against Chelsea at the beginning of December.

Speaking to The Sunderland Echo, O’Neill confirmed that Saha would be allowed to leave early:

“As of today, we have told Louis is free to speak to other clubs and to leave if he can fix himself up somewhere,’ revealed O’Neill.

“That said, we are still a bit short in terms of numbers and Louis may stay with us until the end of the month until such time as – hopefully – we have strengthened the squad a little more.’

In spite of that, Saha is free to leave Wearside at his own discretion, O’Neill confirmed.

There is understood to be interest in Saha from an unnamed South African side.
