Strikers are the recurrent theme of today’s Transfer Rumour Mill it seems, with Sunderland ‘missing out’ on one and being linked with another.

With Nicklas Bendtner injured until the middle of February, the Black Cats are already being linked with a short-term replacement in Bolton’s Kevin Davies.

Davies, 34, has not been assured of his Premier League place this season for the Trotters with the likes of David N’Gog preferred up front.

However, with Sunderland lacking a physical presence up front, the one-time England cap has been linked.

As cagey on the subject as ever, Martin O’Neill told The Sunderland Echo that loans were something to consider:

“The loan market is something that ourselves and others are looking at but there doesn`t seem to be a lot of stuff happening.

“We had a passive interest in things but the Nicklas Bendtner situation – with him being out for weeks – means that it is now something that we really have to look at.’

The striker ‘missed out’ on was former PSG man, Melvut Erding, who has since joined Asamoah Gyan’s former club, Rennes.

Finally, there’s Sporting Lisbon playmaker, Adrien Silva.

The 22 year-old is highly-rated in his home country of Portugal and has U21 caps for his nation.

Everton, Blackburn and Swansea are also believed to be interested in the £5m-rated midfielder, according to The Daily Mail.
