Sunderland have announced that they will pay their respects to the victims of Hillsborough & their families today as they host Liverpool.

On this most poignant of weekends for Liverpool after the weeks’s events, Sunderland have announced that all flags will be at half-mast for this afternoon’s game.

Flags around the ground are at half-mast to mark the anniversaries of the Hillsborough and the Valley Parade fire, however following the information released this week by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, the club have announced they will lower their flags today too.

Speaking to safc.com, CEO Margaret Byrne said of the gesture:

“We recognise and respect the significance of this week for fans and our friends and colleagues at Liverpool Football Club.

‘The Hillsborough tragedy had a profound effect on football as a whole and the thoughts of everyone at Sunderland are with all of those affected by the tragic events of April 15th 1989.”

In what is sure to be an emotionally-charged occasion, the thoughts of all at Vital Sunderland are with the families of the victims & all those connected with Liverpool Football Club.
