Sky Sports news are reporting that Sunderland have held preliminary talks with Manchester City winger Adam Johnson over a possible move to the Stadium of Light.

The 25 year-old Sunderland-born winger only signed a new five-year deal with Champions Manchester City in January but has featured only fleetingly since.

Johnson has been rumoured to be a target for Martin O’Neill all summer long, with Sebastian Larsson and James McClean the only out-and-out wingers at the club.

Sky Sports News report that Sunderland have had a £10m offer for the England international accepted and are now in preliminary talks over a return to the North East.

The 5’10 winger left Middlesbrough in 2010, joining City for an undisclosed fee. It was of course, against Sunderland, that Johnson scored his first goal for the Citizens, rescuing a point for the Eastlands club.

AJ is a Sunderland fan through and through, he has bags of talent, but is lazy and it appears he is not prepared to put the work in, to get that recognition that his name would automatically be on the starting sheet. He lacks the consistancy you would like in a player. He loves to play on the right, but with good defenders it is easy to defend against as his right foot is very weak and he is cleary not confident in using it. Likewise when defending being a left footer playing down the right, his tendancy is to defend with his left foot and he just can’t do it and gives the ball away in dangerous places on more than one occasion. Whe playing down the left, you would think he wiuld be able to handle that being his natural side but for some reason he can’t, however his defending is better, go figure. If you did buy him I would play him in the centre, he is tricky has a great left foot, but is he worth the reported £15m we want for him? Perhaps O’Neill could get the best out of him and if he could then £15m is a steal.

Interesting. I think as much as anything he’d really, really benefit from being loved & being selected week-in, week-out. I’m not so sure about £15m, that is a ludicrous price if you ask me, but for £10m – great business.
