Sunderland’s latest signing Jack Rodwell believes that now he is with the Black Cats, he can only look upwards and his ultimate aim is to get back into the England side.

Rodwell arrived on Wearside yesterday for a deal around the £10 million mark and signed a five year contract and revealed that it was not nice to miss out on getting a place in the squad that went to the World Cup because of lack of games.

The 23 year old should start his Sunderland career in the game against Real Betis on Thursday, a game he will take part in because of Gus Poyet who persuaded the player to make the move north upon his return from Portugal.

Rodwell revealed his goal to reporters when he said: “Without a doubt the last couple of seasons, I`ve not played as much as I would have liked.

“Watching the World Cup left a bitter taste in my mouth and it`s time to put that right and get back in to the England squad.

And his message to Sunderland fans was: “I am just going to give my all. All I can do is give my all. Hopefully score some goals and be a good box-to-box midfielder. I want to give 100 per cent.”

He’d better step up to the plate then, the national squad needs players as desperately as anyone, although I dislike Sunderland players going on international duty because of injuries and moving the league games.
