Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Paraguay midfielder Christian Riveros on free transfer from Mexican Primera Division side C.D.S.C. Cruz Azul.

The 27 year-old has penned a three-year deal and will join fellow international teammate Paulo Da Silva.

Riveros has become the first signing in preparation for the 2010/11 season and the second Paraguayan under Steve Bruce.

The tricky midfielder can be played on either wing and has been prolific with Cruz Azul, making 105 appearances and scoring 16 goals.

More impressively he has made 43 appearances for his country and scored eight goals in a space of five years.

Upon his arrival in Sunderland Riveros expressed his joy in joining up.

He said, “The league is very competitive and Sunderland have shown trust in me as a person and as a footballer. The history here is good and I’m delighted to be joining the club.’
