As expected, Niall Quinn has been appointed new Sunderland manager.

After receiving the backing of the consortium of which he is Chairman-elect, he has appointed himself as manager, with only 2 weeks left before the new season begins.

It is believed that his appointment is only temporary however, with a long term boss still to be appointed. However Quinn will take the reigns from today, ensuring that the necessary transfers in and out of players can begin, with Quinn overseeing team rebuilding and restructuring.

He is set to appoint several experienced members as coaching staff to aid him along, with former Sunderland boss Peter Reid and coaches Bobby Saxton and Ricky Sbragia all linked with Quinn’s new management set up.

We will bring you more news on the appointment as soon as we have it…
