Niall Quinn has signed goalkeeper Darren Ward from Norwich.

The Welsh international has signed a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light after being released by Norwich at the end of last season.

With over 500 career appearances to his name, Ward brings to the club the vital goalkeeping experience that Quinn wanted alongside rookie ‘keepers Ben Alnwick and Trevor Carson.

The manager told the club website,

‘Darren has played over 500 games and is very experienced. This is exactly what Ben Alnwick and Trevor Carson need and exactly
what the club needs in that position.

‘Darren’s arrival will increase the necessity and desire of all our ‘keepers to make the team and they must all push
each other now.’

Ward is 32 years old, has gained 5 caps for Wales and has previously played for Mansfield Town, Notts County, Nottingham Forest and Norwich.
