Quinn backs Sunderland Signings

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has backed Roy Keane`s transfer policy of buying young promising players.

He told the Northern Echo

‘We back our manager – we believe in him and we are prepared to fund that belief.’

‘The big mistake that happens in football is where signings are made for headlines and season tickets and then football is in there somewhere. At this club, football comes first in everything. If Roy Keane fancies a lesser known player in favour of a ritzy-glitzy player, then that is the player I will go for every time. The higher you go the more difficult things are to achieve. That’s because we haven’t been hanging around the top of the Premiership attracting players for the last few years. We are playing catch-up again in a way but we think that the idea of Roy Keane coming up and developing a career in front of 48,000 fans every week is a big thing. Players in general get stick for always just going where the money is. But I think sometimes we do them a disservice. There are some great players out there who know what the best football clubs are about and we wanted players coming here who wanted to wear this particular jersey with pride. Roy stands for something and people in football know that, especially after last season.’

Quinn went on to mention his backers the Drumaville consortium.

‘The consortium have been fantastic. They came in at a terrible time for the club but a great time for an investor and were able to give it the boost it needed.

‘Life in the Premiership is life in the fast lane, The consortium are aware of that now and the view is to help Roy as much as we can in establishing the club in the top flight.

‘That’s the brief of myself and the Drumaville board and Drumaville have stepped on the gas this year.’

In my opinion Niall Quinn can do no wrong. I love it when he comes out and makes a statement he talks with so much passion.

Let just hope our magic carpet ride continues and the team`s fortunes on the pitch change for the better.

Vote of confidence? What he really means is that the players bought aren’t performing as yet and he hopes they do, and please don’t think we wasted your money.

sunderland have a good side but i think they have too many players that cant play at this level (to many championship players) hope you lot stay up just because roy keane is going to be a great manager and sooner or later you will lose him to a more stable prem team but i dont think you will have to worry until sir alex retires, also craig gordon done a great jobs against us (liverpool) great buy

A job for Keane for life wasn’t it? Strange Bates promised Gullit and Vialli the same at our place!

I think you will sail past your last 2 exploits in this division 19pts and the 15pts, stating with a win over Reading next start. Much will depend on this game as to your aspirations.

Surely we will beat our last points total for our last 2 seasons. Any way I think Derby might just do us favor this season. They can gladly take our record off us
