Patrick Van Aanholt played his first game for Sunderland since picking up a shoulder injury on Sunday and the wait to get back into action looks to have paid dividends.

“”It`s been difficult for Patrick, missing so many games.” – Gus Poyet

The Dutchman had not seen action since November but he scored the only goal of the game to see the Black Cats through to the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Leeds United.

And it was this very action that proved to manager Gus Poyet that keeping the former Chelsea man waiting was the right decision to make.

“It`s been difficult for Patrick, missing so many games, but at the same time he needed to sit out and recover properly,” the boss told the club`s official website.

“When any player is out with an injury we always look forward to them coming back so it`s very nice to have him back in the squad.”
