Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was pretty happy about the way his side played at Anfield last night.

The Black Cats went down 2-1, but Poyet pointed out that people had expected Sunderland to go to Anfield and be hammered by their deadly strikers.

As it was there was no shame in a 2-1 loss, better teams have been to Anfield and come off a lot worse off than that. In fact, there were signs that after pulling a goal back that they could have grabbed an equaliser, but that was not to be.

Steve Gerrard gave the home side the lead with a free kick paced just out of the reach of Mannone from 23 yards out after 39 minutes. The goal came about when Vergini brought down Luis Suarez as he was about to go through on goal. The Anfield faithful called for a red card, but
Kevin Friend opted for the yellow.

Liverpool then got a second after the break when Andrea Dossena stood off Sturridge and the goal ace found the net with the help of a deflection off Wes Brown.

Ki grabbed a goal back for Sunderland when the ball came to him from a corner and after that, the visitors had more chances, the best of which clattered the bar from the boo of Lee Cattermole.

Poyet told reporters after the game: ‘For some reason everyone was writing us off, everyone was expecting a party where Liverpool win four-five or six nil. Maybe we will not that good in the beginning but we didn’t allow them to play.

“The substitutes gave us that quality on the ball we were missing and in the end it looks like they were asking for the time and the fact the Liverpool fans celebrated shows that it was a tough game [for them].”

Sunderland`s next two games both come on Monday nights, the first being a home game against West Ham and the second is away to Tottenham.
