Sunderland made it to round five of the FA Cup last night after coming from behind to beat Fulham 3-1 and boss Gus Poyet was highly pleased.

Sunderland were not having much luck as kick off time approached, Jack Rodwell was ruled out of the game in he morning and Connor Wickham had a calf complaint during the warm up and he too missed out.

And when the Black Cats went a goal down in the 28th minute, it looked like it was going to be yet another one of those days.

But that was against the run of play and normality was restored when goalkeeper scored an own goal by carrying a cross over the goal line.

Soon after that Ricardo Alvarez fired home to put the visitors in front before Jordi Gomez made sure that Sunderland went through when he hit the third from the penalty spot.

Poyet told reporters after the game: ‘I was just thinking how unfair football is because we were the better team by far, we were creating and controlling the ball. We didn’t allow Fulham to play the game they like to play and we conceded a very strange goal as well.

‘I just wanted the players to believe that something would happen.

‘I think the equaliser was probably the turning point of the game, but overall we deserved to win the game so I don’t think it’s an action to analyse too much. From our point of view, it was a game we needed to get back to a certain way of football, a certain way of passing football, controlling and being aggressive.

‘The result should have been a consequence of that but, in the end, something needed to happen and maybe that goal changed the game for us.

‘Overall, I am pleased today. I really enjoyed it. I didn’t say this once, I think, this year. I really enjoyed watching the team today.’

Sunderland now take on giant killers Bradford City in the next round at Valley Parade.
