Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was far from happy with his side after they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

The first half display that Sunderland put in had Poyet feeling confused because it was so poor, they offered very little going forward.

The Black Cats did not have a shot on target until the second half and even that came after Liam Bridcutt was sent off for his second bookable offence.

The defeat saw Poyet’s men slip to within one point of the drop zone.

Poyet said to reporters: ‘We were confused in the first half, badly confused, I think you need to be flexible.

‘You cannot take things literally because, on the pitch, things happen. I don’t know what is going to happen on the pitch.

‘I don’t know whether they are going to play with a square in the middle, or four across the pitch.

‘You need to adapt.’
