Manuel Pellegrini admitted that his Manchester City side really had to get the win over Sunderland in the Capital One Cup last night. In his words, it was an ‘important win.’

City put on a good display in the first half and the result was settled by the time the half-time whistle sounded with the Blues being 4-0 up.

Sergio Aguero (pen), Kevin de Bruyne, Vito Mannone (og), and Raheem Sterling did the damage to Sunderland and ensured that they could take it relatively easy in the second period.

Pellegrini told the BBC: ‘It was important to win the way we did today because we have just come from two important defeats, one in the Champions League and the other in the Premier League, so it was important to start this Capital One Cup in the way that we did in the first half.’
