Former Manchester United player John O’Shea said that he was shocked at the rapid decline that his old club are going through at the moment.

O’Shea put in a great performance against United at the weekend and the Sunderland captain expected more from Louis van Gaal’s men.

The Black Cats took the lead in the game after just three minutes and despite United dragging themselves back into the game, a late goal which was credited as a De Gea own goal gave Sunderland the points.

O’Shea believes that his old side have ‘lost their aura’ that they held when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo after the game, O’Shea said: ‘Because of the season they are having and the amount of injuries they have got, it is difficult for them.

‘They still have some very good attacking players. I thought our full-backs did particularly well in closing them down, but they don’t have as many players as they used to have.’

They still have some top players and we beat them because of the way we played, not because of their fall from grace.
