O’Neill unimpressed by McClean’s Twitter antics

Martin O’Neill has admitted that he was less than impressed with the antics of his Irish international winger James McClean on Twitter this week.

Following a poor display from the Republic of Ireland, McClean tweeted after the match to vent his frustration at not being selected and then subsequently left on the bench all night.

The 23 year-old also labelled his nation’s display, a late 2-1 win over Kazakhstan, as ’embarrassing’.

McClean apologised the next morning and was giving 30 minutes in a friendly win over Oman, however O’Neill has now waded into the debate.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the gaffer said that McClean had been very much in the wrong:

‘He has a bit of a problem (with Twitter) and we will have to rectify it,’ admitted O’Neill.

‘He has taken himself off Twitter, apparently then he might have a situation with Facebook as well and about 14 other accounts that he has.’

O’Neill continued by backing Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni in the row:

‘James is rather young for that at the moment. I think Mr Trapattoni has got a couple of years on him and a couple of titles too in front of James, so I think he’s entitled to pick the team.’
