According to various sources Steve Bruce’s job is under even greater threat this morning with Martin O’Neill believed to be the ideal replacement.
Bruce’s position has been weakened by Niall Quinn’s sudden departure as chairman, leaving Ellis Short to take up the reigns.
Short’s arrival at the Stadium of Light paved the way for Roy Keane’s departure in 2009 shortly after his arrival at the club.
According to the Sunday Express Bruce’s time at SOL is running out and Short has lined up former Leicester, Celtic and Aston Villa supremo O’Neill as his replacement.
O’Neill has been out of the game since leaving Villa on the eve of last season and was reportedly set to take the West Ham job from Avram Grant but changed his mind after the news was leaked.
Indeed, Ladbrokes have Bruce as short as 2/1 to be the first Premier League manager of the season to lose his job.

Lots of journo’s and sources saying he is as good as. O’Neill would be a good replacement
o’neil is good for top 6 with a vast amount of money to spend, but as soon as the money pot dries up he will spit his dummy out and leave, oh and he buys average british players picks the same 11 each week without fail, if i was sunderland i would go fro moyes or hughes not o’neil cos he can not win anything even with £120million to spend good luck though 😉
Hughes might be a bad shout but I have my doubts Moyes would come, I think he’d rather hang in at Everton until United/Spurs come up.
