Martin O’Neill has confirmed that he will look at the club’s fringe players and those out on-loan before making any decisions in the January Transfer Window.
The likes of Nyron Nosworthy and George McCartney are experienced professionals away from the club on-loan at present, at Watford and West Ham respectively.
Northern Ireland international McCartney has categorically stated that he will not return to the Stadium of Light, whilst Nosworthy’s future remains less clear-cut.
The former Gillingham centre-back had been out of favour during the Steve Bruce reign but O’Neill has included another defensive outcast in his most recent matchday squads in Matt Killgallon.
Speaking to Clubcall, O’Neill said:
‘I think it’s only natural for me, having just taken over, not to want players to go out on loan immediately. I want to see what I’ve got and I want to work with the players to see what difference it might make to them.
‘But I’m also looking at going out to see the players we already have on loan – like Nyron Nosworthy at Watford for example.’
O’Neill continued:
‘In an ideal world you want to assess everyone but you can’t do everything immediately and we have to accept that we’re in a run of games in a short space of time that demand our full attention.’
