O’Neill: ‘The players responded well’

Martin O’Neill was full of praise for goal-scorer Frazier Campbell after the forward marked his return to first-team action with the equalizer against Middlesbrough.

Tony Mowbray’s side took the lead after 16 minutes through a splendid Barry Robson volley.

Sunderland though they had levelled just before half-time when Craig Gardner teased a left-footed effort home but the goal was disallowed for offside against Connor Wickham.

The right decision was given, but for the wrong reason as Gardner had handled the ball in the build-up.

Around the hour mark, sub Campbell raced 80-odd yards to meet James McClean’s centre, side-footing home from the edge of the area.

Speaking to SAFC.com at full-time, O’Neill praised the forward:



I’m very pleased indeed; Fraizer’s been out for a long time,’ he added. ‘His enthusiasm has never waned and neither has his determination.

‘He has had a lot of setbacks, so it was fantastic for him to go and get the equalising goal and great to see him celebrating.’

The boss also reserved credit for the way the side battled back from Robson’s early goal:

‘After going a goal down I think the players responded well.

‘There hasn’t been 10 or 15 minutes in any game over the last few weeks that have been easy for us and today was no different.’

Sunderland will now do battle with Middlesbrough at the Riverside in 10 days time.
