Martin O’Neill has told Sky Sports News that his priority will be adding to the club’s striking ranks this summer.

With Nicklas Bendtner only on loan from Arsenal, and Frazier Campbell in and out of of the side following injury, O’Neill’s next most senior options are Connor Wickham and Ji Dong Won.

O’Neill said of his lack of striking options:

‘Of course it’s a position that you would be looking at, considering that one of our main strikers actually is on loan.

‘That situation has not been resolved, nor have we had any time to do that.

‘But when you have one of your main strikers as a loan player, then of course it becomes important for you to look at centre-forwards.’

Sunderland have been linked with two forwards in particular by the tabloid press already this week.

Wolves’ Steven Fletcher and Wigan’s Victor Moses are two names being linked with a potential summer move to the Stadium of Light, though Moses is also believed to be wanted by Liverpool.

According to The Daily Mail, O’Neill will be asked to raise his own transfer funds by moving on fringe players.

The likes of Ahmed Elmohamady, Cristian Riveros and George McCartney are out of favour and in some cases out on loan but more worrying is the likelihood of losing Stephane Sessegnon.

The Mail understand that chairman Ellis Short will instruct O’Neill to move on some of the highly-paid flops from the Steve Bruce and Roy Keane era’s in order to fund his own ambitions.
