Martin O’Neill has this morning confirmed that utility man Kieran Richardson has asked to leave the club.

The 27 year-old defender-cum-midfielder, who played 90 minutes at Arsenal, has told O’Neill that he wants to leave the club for family reasons.

The former England international has been linked with moves to the likes of Arsenal, Everton, QPR and West Ham United this summer by the press, but remains a Black Cat.

Speaking to The Sunderland Echo, O’Neill confirmed the news:

“Kieran came to see me in the transfer window and for family issues and what have you, he thought maybe a change would suit him.

“It`s been ongoing but no-one has come in and made an offer.

“Naturally, if he plays like that I`d like to keep him,’ confirmed O’Neill.

Confirmation of the former Manchester United man’s desire to leave the Stadium of Light will only heighten O’Neill’s eagerness to sign a natural left-back.
