Martin O’Neill remains in the frame for the Sunderland manager’s job after rejecting Middlesbrough’s offer.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson had talks with the former Celtic boss last week, but O’Neill has decided the Riverside job is not for him. Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have also both courted O’Neill this summer, and both now have new managers in place.

It does increase the possibility that Niall Quinn, believed to have already held preliminary talks with the Ulsterman, could be set to get his man subject to the takeover being complete.

Nothing can happen officially until the consortium has completed its protracted takeover of the club, but nothing is stopping Quinn from holding talks with O’Neill or any other managerial candidate in the meantime.

However, if reports are to be believed, one of the major factors for O’Neill rejecting Boro was location, with the Irishman, who lives in Buckinghamshire, feeling that Boro is too far north away from his sick wife.

If so, it would mean that Quinn certainly has a job on his hands to persuade O’Neill that his next job should be on Wearside.
