O’Neill: ‘Our best win since I’ve been here’

Martin O’Neill was a happy man yesterday evening having seen his side trash Wigan 4-1 at the DW Stadium.

The Ulsterman said he even rated the win even higher than the 1-0 success over Manchester City on New Year’s Day.

Craig Gardner got things under way deep into first-half stoppage time before goals from James McClean, Stephane Sessegnon and David Vaughan recorded an emphatic victory for the Black Cats.

Speaking to the Official Site afterwords, O’Neill said:

‘I thought that was our best win since I’ve been here.’

O’Neill continued:

‘I know the Manchester City game was extraordinary but I’ve just told the players in the dressing room that tonight’s game has been our best win.

‘We had a day less than Wigan to prepare for the game and we were out on our feet after playing City.

‘It feels as though we’ve had to play three games to get that result and here we are with so much energy and courage once again.’

Sunderland will now turn their attentions to the F.A Cup with a visit to London Road, Peteroborough on Sunday.
