According to reports, Martin O’Neill could be set to make Aston Villa free agent Carlos Cuellar his first permanent capture.

The Spaniard, who arrived at Villa Park under O’Neill for ~£9m, is out of contract and looks set to leave the Midlands.

A re-union with O’Neill seems likely and the papers are reporting that the deal is as good as done.

Other free agent targets include Wigan Athletic midfielder Mohammed Diame as well as Bolton’s Kevin Davies and Blackburn Rovers’ Junior Hoilett.

Veteran Wanderers forward Davies suggested that despite relegation he would remain at the Reebok Stadium.

As eluded to before, Canadian winger Hoilett is sure to be sought after by bigger clubs, Tottenham Hotspur among those linked.

O’Neill is also being linked with moves for players who are under contract.

Chelsea’s backup left back Ryan Bertrand is one of those on O’Neill’s summer shopping list according to The Daily Mail and The Sunday Sun.

Athletico Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente is also being linked with a move to the Stadium of Light. With bigger suitors from all over Europe, this has to be one of the more far-fetched transfer rumours of the summer!

Another striker continually linked, and who could actually make the move to Wearside is Wolves’ Stephen Fletcher, who has been linked with a move for several weeks now.
