Sunderland’s League Cup run is over for another year, beaten at the fourth-round stage by Championship side Middlesbrough.

A 39th minute strike from Scott McDonald sealed Middlesbrough’s route to the quarter-finals, with Sunderland looking void of ideas throughout.

Speaking to safc.com afterwards, Martin O’Neill pulled no punches in his assessment:

‘We didn`t play well enough and we didn`t give our supporters enough to get enthused about,’ conceded O’Neill.

‘For us this was a big night and we`ve failed the test.

“I think you learn more about people in adversity. We need to get a grip of the situation and prepare ourselves for Saturday, it`s a different competition and it`s a big game for us.”

Sunderland play host to Premier League strugglers Aston Villa this Saturday & will need to improve their performance sharpish ahead of O’Neill’s reunion with his former employers.
