Martin O’Neill has blasted rumours started by talkSPORT’s Stan Collymore on Saturday evening that the Ulsterman had tendered his resignation at Sunderland.

The 60 year-old Black Cats’ boss was alleged to have offered to walk away from the Stadium of Light after Collymore, who played briefly under O’Neill at Leicester City, started rumours on the radio station talkSPORT.

Twitter quickly helped fan the flames of the fire but Sunderland were quick to deny that the Kilrea-born boss had offered his resignation.

Speaking to The Sunderland Echo O’Neill branded the rumours as ‘lazy’.

“Stan Collymore is apparently the one who has run with the thing and I`m kind of disappointed in that,’ said O’Neill.

“I think it`s lazy, but it`s indicative of the time we`re in, because people are looking for the headline and they want to be the first with it, regardless of what it is.’

The gaffer continued:

“It`s the age in which we`re in and there`s not much I can do about it.

“Am I really bothered about it? Not at all.”
