OFFICIAL: Cuellar becomes first summer signing

Sunderland have made their first addition of the summer, signing free agent Carlos Cuellar on a two-year contract.

The 30 year-old former Osasuna, Rangers and Aston Villa defender becomes the first permanent signing of Martin O’Neill’s reign.

There had been strong rumours that Cuellar would return to his homeland with former employers Osasuna as well as Valencia linked with a move.

Cuellar, who can play at right-back or centre-back, has been heavily linked with a reunion with O’Neill who brought him to English football in 2008 for £7.8m

During his four years at Villa Park, the Spaniard made 123 appearances scoring four goals for the Villans.

Welcome to Sunderland, Carlos.
