Sunderland have made their first addition of the summer, signing free agent Carlos Cuellar on a two-year contract.

The 30 year-old former Osasuna, Rangers and Aston Villa defender becomes the first permanent signing of Martin O’Neill’s reign.

There had been strong rumours that Cuellar would return to his homeland with former employers Osasuna as well as Valencia linked with a move.

Cuellar, who can play at right-back or centre-back, has been heavily linked with a reunion with O’Neill who brought him to English football in 2008 for £7.8m

During his four years at Villa Park, the Spaniard made 123 appearances scoring four goals for the Villans.

Welcome to Sunderland, Carlos.

Good luck Carlos, going to one of the few Prem clubs with fans who always seem a decent bunch. Never been to Sunderland, but would guess there aren’t too many prawn sarnies in evidence.

Best of luck Carlos. wfc123 Carlos is a true professional, he’s a hard working player whether it be at RB or CB, he doesn’t bitch and moan like usual players in the prem’, it was a shame he was used as a bit part player for some time at Villa but when he was included or came on as a sub he worked his socks off for us every game bar a couple, all in all you have a great player in Carlos and he’s a top bloke 🙂

decent player, good professional, surprised he joined up with MON though, that pratt was playing him in any position other than where he should be, in the centre!

BTW, just for reference, we are Villans (ANS) not Villains! We aren’t baddies!

He’s an honest MON type player never managed to hold down a CB position at villa under 4 managers! and is a pretty *****e right back.
    He’s a likeable lad though

Hes honest and hardworking, but a warning to all Sunderland fans…..watch O Neill with his signings cus he has a tendancy to get players in on massive wages and then jump ship when things dont go his way. You could go through what we have just had to go through and that is 2 seasons of *****e while you try and reduce your wages. Good luck with that and the new season 🙂

I’ve learnt something there Fear! Cheers, hopefully he’ll do OK for us. Not sure where he’ll fit in unless MON is going to play O’Shea at right-back.
