Lee Cattermole has this morning (Monday) signed a brand-new four-year contract with the club taking him through until 2016.

The new deal, which comes off the back of the 24 year-old’s latest red card – five in his Sunderland career – is a surefire indicator of Martin O’Neill’s trust in the tempestuous midfielder to continue to lead the club going forward.

Cattermole’s disciplinary record has once again been the subject of much scrutiny after he was dismissed against MK Dons in the Capital One Cup, a sending-off which meant he missed the derby just over a week ago.

His existing contract ran until next summer, having signed a four-year deal upon his arrival at the Stadium of Light in 2009.

Since signing from Wigan Athletic for £6m five years ago, Cattermole has 76 league and cup starts with a further four substitute appearances.
