No Panic Buys Promises Gus

Gus Poyet says that the last thing he will be doing during the January transfer window is panic buying.

Sunderland may be bottom of the pile at the moment but they still have a realistic chance of escaping the drop with the right tweeking to the playing staff.

The Uruguayan says he is not just targeting seasoned professionals; he will be looking for that bit of quality that can actually improve the side, not just add more of the same.

‘It’s not about just bringing in players for the sake of bringing in players,’ Poyet told Sky Sports News. ‘We’ll stay calm. It’s the sixth so there are still 20 days to go!

‘That’s the most difficult part in January. In the summer, you’ve got time normally so you can check plenty of things and really go deeper into situations.

‘Saying that, we work, I know what I want and what we’re looking for and we will see what we can get.

‘I don’t think it’s one way only. It’s not like everybody needs to be experienced. It’s a mix and we need to make a few changes if possible and we need to make sure it affects the team in a positive way.’

Tonight Sunderland face Manchester United in the League Cup semi final first leg, before a jaunt down to London to face Fulham at the weekend, a game that the Black Cats need to get something from.
