Steve Bruce played a very weak side with only three first team regulars starting in Limerick against Munster.

Simon Mignolet started in goal for his debut for Sunderland and he was behind a back four of Tainio, McCartney, Nosworthy and Anton Ferdinand.

The midfield consisted of Murphy, Reid, Colback, David Healy with Kenwyne Jones and Noble leading the line up front.

Munster took a shock lead in the first half but Sunderland made a lot of changes in the second to make sure the victory was guaranteed.

Martyn Waghorn, who was rumoured to be allowed to leave on loan by Bruce this season, scored two goals inside three minutes to turn the game completely around.

The game was over after Waghorn scored a sublime free kick from the edge of the area but his night was spoiled by picking up an injury just before the full time whistle.

Overall, a good run out for some ‘shop window’ type players and also for some young players who need the experience.

A full match report from Malcolm Robinson will be on Vital Sunderland in the next day as he was there in Ireland to report on the game.
