Attacker James McFadden looks set to stay at Sunderland after a move to Nottingham Forest collapsed.
McFadden, 29, saw his short-term contract at the Stadium of Light expire in January and there had been talk of an extension.
The former Scotland international has since left the Black Cats and looked set to sign a deal with Nottingham Forest, then managed by his former Scotland and Birmingham City boss, Alex McLeish.
However, following McLeish’s sacking from the City Ground, McFadden appears to be back in Martin O’Neill’s sights as the Ulsterman looks to bolster his paper thin squad.
The plan had originally been to extend McFadden’s deal on Wearside before loaning him out, however following his collapsed move to Forest, there could be something in the pipeline.
Speaking to The Sunderland Echo O’Neill said that a deal could be done:
“We let James`s situation run past the transfer deadline and I think he went down to Nottingham Forest before McLeish departed,’ confirmed O’Neill.
“But obviously events have changed that situation and I don`t know what`s happened since then.
“I`ll speak to the agent though and see where we stand.”
McFadden has made just three substitute appearances for the Black Cats this season.
