Winger James McClean has received death threats on social networking site Twitter today, after being called into the Republic of Ireland squad.

The 23 year-old was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, but having represented Northern Ireland at youth level, elected to play for the Republic at senior level.

Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni selected the former Derry man in his 23-man squad for the European Championships this summer and the move has caused outrage.

McClean bit back by Tweeting: ‘love the abuse am gettin of shock N.I fans, just worry about watchin ur own country at the euros…oh wait #mybad #awkward haha.’

One user responded by saying: ‘u deserve to be shot for that comment!! Your playing for Ireland and not the country you were born in (NI).’

The explosive winger received international clearance to represent the Republic in February of this year before going on to make his debut as a substitute against the Czech Republic.

McClean has since deleted the Tweet from his account.
