Mick McCarthy says survival is still possible as Sunderlands boss refuses to give up hope.

Sunderland face Charlton tomorrow, a loss would increase the pressure on the boss and will hasten calls to club chairman Bob Murray to wield the axe as it owuld make 9 losses in a row.

Murray has already stated: ‘I don’t pick the team or play in it’.

McCarthy however says he can’t give up hope of survival. ‘I’ve come and sat in here for the last two and a half years and I think you know me by now, that’s never going to change. If I was to change that and I was going to stop doing that, it would be fairly bleak for everybody else, wouldn’t it?’

McCarthy says he has a good relationship with the chairman:

‘I speak to him regularly enough, as I did last season when we were winning loads of games. I have spoken to him a similar amount of times this season when we have not been winning games. But he’s not been on the phone every day chewing my ear, no.’

He highlights the problem as ‘conceding goals’ simple as that.

I’m afraid to say, that unless you put money in, then you won’t improve. And it matters not a jot who is manager.
