Sunderland’s vital home game with Leicester City on Saturday will see Martin Atkinson take charge of proceedings.

The West Yorkshire based official has been no stranger to Sunderland so far this season as we have already seen him take charge of four games involving the Black Cats.

The first game was at home to Manchester United in August, the game was drawn 1-1 and only two cards were shown, neither of which went to a Sunderland player.

On the 28th December, Atkinson was with us once again when the team went to Villa Park. The game ended 0-0 but there was five yellow cards and one red shown. Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph was sent off at the start of the second half and out of the five yellows shown, Wes Brown, Adam Johnson, Lee Cattermole and Emanuele Giaccherini got one each.

In February Atkinson was back at the Stadium of Light to oversee the game with Queens Park Rangers. Not such a good result in this game as the Black Cats went down 2-0, five yellow cards were show of which two went to Sunderland players Seb Larsson and Ricky Alvarez.

More recently, Atkinson took charge of the game at the Britannia Stadium when Stoke City hosted a game that Sunderland needed to get something from. The game ended 1-1 after the lads had taken an early 1-0 lead and five yellow cards were shown. Billy Jones, John O’Shea and Lee Cattermole took Sunderland’s share.

All in all, Atkinson has taken charge of 44 games in all competitions, in that time he has shown 169 yellow cards and ten red.

Running the lines for Atkinson at the weekend will be Michael Mullarkey and Steve Child, while the fourth official will be Chris Foy.
