Its looking like Jeremain Lens could be ready to return to action in time for the derby game with Newcastle United.

The winger has missed the Black Cats last five games after undergoing a groin operation, it was hoped at first that the player would be ready again for action in time for the crunch clash with Southampton this weekend according to the Sunderland Echo.

But internal bruising due to the op means his comeback has been delayed.

Sunderland take on Newcastle on March 20th at St James Park when the lads will be looking to turnover the Magpies yet again.

However, Lens remains sidelined with internal bruising stemming from the operation.

Speaking to the Echo, Sam Allardyce said: “He is not ready for this weekend. He has had a little bit of a problem with a haematoma where the arthroscope went in, but we think the operation is done and dusted now and he will be OK for the Newcastle game.”
