The Scottish international is set to line up for the reserves tonight against local rivals Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Kyle has been out for 18 months and undergone surgery twice in that time in an attempt to sort out a hip cartilage problem. The striker last played for the reserves last April when he scored 8 goals in 2 games before a recurrence of the injury meant the striker feared for his career.

The big striker is not everyone’s cup of tea at Sunderland but it cannot be argued that his presence in the team would add strength up front and cause defenders problems, and boss Mick McCarthy will be hoping he makes a swift and successful recovery.

It’s not all good news on the injury front however, as Northern Ireland international George McCartney has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

It was hoped he would also take part in reserve team action this month but after this current setback it is feared he may not play at all this season. The full back has been a huge loss this season, his partnership on the left flank with Julio Arca one of Sunderland’s most potent attacking threat last term.
