Southampton manager Ronald Koeman was left feeling pretty angry with his players after they lost at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Koeman was far from convinced that his side deserved to give away two penalties, but it was his side’s performance that really got up his nose.

Jose Fonte fouled Danny Graham to give Jordi Gomez the chance of netting from the spot, which he did, then Sadio Mane levelled things for the visitors.

Then Gomez doubled his tally from twelve yards when James Ward-Prowse brought down Jermain Defoe and was shown the red card.

Koeman told the BBC: ‘I don’t know if the penalties are good decisions by the referee. I will have to watch the clips.

‘The thing that has frustrated me the most is the performance of my own team because we did not play at our level.

‘The 10 minutes after half-time were our worst of the season so far.

‘We only showed our level with one less player on the pitch. We played much better football and were the better team when it was 10 men against 11. That is so strange it is unbelievable.’
