Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce was more than impressed with the contribution that Jan Kirchhoff made to the game after the Black Cats unluckily lost at home to Manchester City on Tuesday night.

The game was settled by a 16th minute Sergio Aguero’s strike, but it was Joe Hart who was far the busiest of the two keepers.

More than a couple of times Hart had to be at his very best to keep Sunderland out as they got stuck into City looking for the equalising goal.

There was outstanding displays from most of the Sunderland players but Big Sam thought that Kirchhoff deserved a special mention given his nightmare debut just a few days ago against Tottenham.

After the game, Sam told the Press Association: ‘I don’t know anybody who has played as well as that in centre midfield this season for anybody, whether it be Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and certainly Manchester City today.

‘He played that well that they changed to a three and tried to block it up at half-time because we were dominating them, and we were dominating them because of Jan’s quality of passing and his quality of finding space. ‘I have to say it was up there as one of the top performances of any midfielder for any team.’

a 100 times better last night than his debut, the whole team was up for it after they scored. I’ll never know how we lost that one
