According to today`s press, Kenwyne Jones will be looking to leave Sunderland if the Black Cats are relegated at the weekend. The Daily Mirror quoted Kenwyne as stating: ‘If we stay up I am definitely going to be here. If we go down I don’t know what is going to happen.

‘I can’t say what is going to happen but, at the same time, I just have to work hard and do the best I can for Sunderland.’

Harry Redknapp had been publicly chasing Kenwyne during the January transfer window and speculation has been persistent since then linking Jones with a move down South, reports that the striker has noticed himself:

‘Tottenham have been linked with me quite strongly for month upon month,’

‘I can’t say I know what is going on there or whether it is just paper talk or what.

‘I can only focus on the job I have now.’

In typical fashion, this is a story has been made out of nothing. What Kenwyne does state is that if we survive he is staying at the club, but again that can hardly be surprising considering he signed a new contract in January. If the club does go down, then every member of the first team squad and the manager himself will be unsure over their future with the club.

Chairman Niall Quinn signalled his intent to keep Kenwyne Jones by rejecting big money offers from Tottenham and signing him to a new contract in January. He has also stated in the past that the club are prepared for the worst, so the typical clearout that we have come accustomed to following our previous relegations will not be done by force, but rather by choice. Whether Sunderland survive or are relegated, major changes will be required. At the end of the day, our first XI and squad are not good enough; despite former manager Roy Keane thinking otherwise last September. Sunderland will need to be restructured, and the focus should be on to improve the players who would be considered a regular, not on the squad as a whole, at least to begin with.

Whether Kenwyne Jones will be kept if Sunderland are relegated remains to be seen, but you could substitute his name for any other player and it will still remain the same: if Sunderland go down, no player will be certain of their future. Every player can be quoted as stating: ‘If we stay up I am definitely going to be here. If we go down I don’t know what is going to happen.’

Seems that Quinn may be following West Brom’s blue print. Get promoted, stick the same players and hope you survive. If not, then it costs you very little to compete in the Championship. I think that’s why he keeps players like Chopra, Leadbitter and Healy. Their top flight quality is debatable, but they can always be loaned out during the season and if you get relegated, they’re perfect players to get you promoted again.
