With Theo Walcott not being able to go to the World Cup finals in Brazil, Adam Johnson is hoping that he can do enough to get selected for the England squad.

Johnson takes no pleasure in the fact that Walcott does look like missing out but he doesn’t see why he cannot use this opportunity to prove that he is quite capable of being the man that England turn to in their hour of need.

And hitting a hat trick in the 4-1 demolition of Fulham in London on Saturday did nothing but help his chances of representing his country.

He told reporters: ‘I was disappointed for Theo, he’s a good friend of mine. I came a long way in the England ranks with him, I was gutted for him when I found out he was going to miss the World Cup.

‘But these things happen in football and one man’s downfall is another man’s gain. So if I can be the person that’s gaining then I’ll be delighted.

‘I want to get back to being a part of the squad, if I can keep playing well you never know about the World Cup.’

Johnson’s three goals on Saturday moved him onto four for the season from his 19 appearances so far.
