Roy Keane could have his first real injury dilemma since arriving at the club. With Stephen Elliot, David Connolly, Daryl Murphy and Jon Stead all on the treatment table, Keane facing the prospect of Chris Brown, Stan Varga and Kenny Cunningham all being added to that list.

Brown is struggling with an ankle problem, although Keane is still hopeful both he and Stead, out with a thigh injury, will be available.

Keane said: ‘The injuries are not great at the moment, but one or two played on Monday and they are pushing for a place.

‘Browny’s got a sore ankle and there is a good chance he will not train until Friday.

‘Jon Stead, we will look at that on Thursday and he might have a chance for the weekend. We will wait and see.’

The new manager is also hopeful that his experienced centre-back pairing of Varga and Cunningham will also play at Ipswich despite missing training,

‘Stan’s got a hip injury, he won’t be training this week, and Kenny’s feeling his groin.

‘But it doesn’t worry me too much. Kenny and Stan are experienced players and the three games in a week definitely takes its toll, especially when you are in your mid-thirties.

‘I’ve just got to keep an eye on them, I’m hoping they will be OK for the weekend.’

The squad is buiding and every team gets injuries. The main thing is the confidence that exists now that was sadly lacking before. Sunderland should be able to build on that.
