Ever since Henderson was called up to the England senior squad he has gone a little of the boil.

He made sure that he impressed Steve Bruce in training by working hard to show he wants to remain in midfield for Sunderland.

Henderson said: ‘There had been a little bit of talk that I might not have been playing and it made me a little bit disappointed, so I made sure in training it was clear I wanted to play and I wanted to go out and make sure I did things right.

‘I have been disappointed in the last couple of weeks. I don’t think I have played particularly well, so this week in training, I really knuckled down and went back to basics.

‘I just want to kick on from here and keep going.’

Henderson is buzzing with our league position and strength around the squad and is hopeful the form can continue into the New year.

He added: ‘We were in a similar position to where we are now last year. The difference is we have got a bit of strength in depth.

‘When I can put people on like [Bolo] Zenden and Malbranque, and play [John] Mensah and [Anton] Ferdinand, who haven’t been involved, that just tells you what sort of progress we have made, I believe.

‘You only get there by results, but I am very, very pleased with how we look, I am very, very pleased with the nucleus of the squad.

‘There’s a good nucleus of young players with a little bit of experience as well, so that pleases me.’

You know he’s out to prove any bad press wrong from the England game and I can see a few more goals given the chance
