Sunderland fielded a very strong team that played the whole duration of the game as the season preparations heated up down Victoria Park this evening.

Steve Bruce, who has split his team into two for the friendlies against Hartlepool and Darlington this week, would have been impressed by tidy displays from Brown, Colback, Bardsley and Gyan.

Star man for Sunderland was none other than Sessegnon who created all of the chances with sublime skill and entertained the 5,700 spectators crammed in for Richie Humphrey’s special night.

Hartlepool took a shock lead through ex Newcastle star Nobby Solano but then Sunderland found their rhythm straight after going behind.

Gyan scored from a Larsson cross, Colback fired in a low shot for the second and then Larsson wrapped up a mazy run from Sess Bomb to finish the night on a high.

Now Sunderland face Darlington, which will see Wickham, Dong-Won and Gardner feature at the Northern Echo Arena.

Got to say that Bardsley is a terrific right back, Gyan is very powerful, Cattermole and Colback dictated really week and that Sessegnon is outstanding. Good match and I felt that we gave you a good game. Thanks for turning up to honour a legend.
