Asamoah claimed he scored the goal last night to ‘punish the defenders mistakes’ and what a cool finish it was by the Ghanaian striker.

Gyan, who has now scored five goals for his new club, is enjoying his time on Wearside and is hopeful that he can continue to flourish after a slow start to the season.

Bruce felt Gyan was not ready to play in the top flight after a hard Summer and sadness over the World Cup result with his nation. However, he has been brought in at the right time after Bent faces a few weeks on the sidelines and Gyan could not be happier.

Gyan told the Sunderland Echo: “I`m very happy at the moment because I was brought here to score goals.

“Things are going well and I hope it continues.

“My family are settled now.

“After the World Cup, everything was a bit difficult for me in my preparations for the season.

“My fitness wasn`t good and I had to be given some time.

“The coach was very intelligent and he gave me some time to settle in here.

“I have to thank him for taking the pressure off me and using me at the right time.

“I`m doing the right things now.”

Gyan also commented on the importance of the point away to Spurs and how he is fearless as he heads to Stamford Bridge this weekend.

He added: “It was a very important point,” said Gyan.

“We were a bit sloppy in the first half and the manager wasn`t happy, so we had to come back out and get into the game.

“It helped when we changed the system and the second half was much better.

“But it was good that we were able to equalise immediately.

“Coming from behind and getting a point was important.

“It`s going to be very difficult against Chelsea because they are obviously top of the table.

“We should give them a good match and we`ll see what happens.

“I don`t think we are scared of them because, with the calibre of players we have, we`re capable of winning some games.”
