Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet watched his side win for the first time in three months at the Stadium of Light and then insisted that the FA Cup is a priority this season.

The Black Cats overcame Leeds United thanks to a goal from Patrick van Aanholt in the 33rd minute of his return from injury.

The Dutchman was one of six changes to the side made by Poyet, but he insists that the changes were not made to lower the importance of the cup.

“I like it, I love it,” Poyet told reporters. “I think it’s great. It brings special moments.

“When it’s close to the semi-final, when it’s against top teams and you win the game, it brings the team together, especially with the fans as well.

‘I don’t think it’s a distraction, playing football. I love to play football. If somebody thinks that playing a cup game in midweek or the middle of January is a distraction, then they should go to the casino or to the cinema.”

Much was made before kick off about the 1973 cup final and how this was being seen as a revenge match for Leeds, but in the end the scoreline was a repeat of that famous final.
