Manager Simon Grayson has said he refuses to be downbeat following defeat to Everton in last night’s EFL Cup tie.

Travelling to Goodison Park for the third round tie, Ronald Koeman’s side came out as three nil winners on the day but with six changes made to the starting line up, Grayson still felt he could take positives as we did create a few chances we should’ve done better with.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media for his post game press conference, a relatively upbeat gaffer said he knew it would be a difficult game so he wasn’t going to be too disappointed.

‘When you are coming here you know it is going to be a tough game. They had got a strong team and a strong bench. I thought at stages we were quite comfortable but when you give good players time and room in the 18-yard box they are going to punish you with a pass or with a finish.’

Grayson felt that touch extra quality was the main difference, as Everton were clinical in their chances and Sunderland weren’t.

‘That was disappointing and that is regardless of whether you are playing Everton or Cardiff on Saturday you have got to be ruthless in the 18-yard box and at the top end of the pitch we need to have just a little bit more purpose about us. We knew it was going to be tough for us tonight but the first part of it was good.’

He went on to say.

‘When we have the ball we need to keep it better, we need to put them under pressure a little bit more and obviously the chances we made with Jonny Williams and Callum McManaman coming on helped us create some chances.’
