Craig Gordon looks set to return to first-team training by the end of the week.

The Scottish goalkeeper has been sidelined for roughly 10 months with a knee problem, the second long-term injury the former Hearts man has suffered.

With Simon Mignolet injured too, Keiren Westwood has stepped into the first-team and impressed. However, Gordon could well be back in the first-team picture once he has built up his fitness levels.

Speaking to The Sunderland Echo, Martin O’Neill said:

“Craig is going to undergo a number of tests and we`ll see how he is after that.

“He`s been out for a long time and obviously he`s anxious to get back.”

The 28 year-old is out of contract in the summer but O’Neill is a known admirer of the 6’4′ stopper, who looks like he could have a future on Wearside.
