Darron Gibson is eagerly awaiting the first team returns of Lee Cattermole and Victor Anichebe. They would provide a timely boost, as well as potentially being crucial, to Sunderland’s Premier League survival bid.

Sunderland went into the international break with a point against Burnley at the Stadium of Light, all three were needed really, but boss David Moyes was able to confirm in his post-match news conference the experienced duo were ‘nearing a return.’

Cattermole has been limited to just three appearances for Sunderland this season with the last of them coming against Crystal Palace in September. Anichebe on the other hand returned from a month out against former club West Brom in January, but was then sidelined following his appearance from the bench.

Having Cattermole back will be ‘important’ for Gibson as his leadership abilities are needed with Anichebe’s hold up ability making him a perfect foil for Jermain Defoe.

Gibson told the Official Website.

‘Getting Catts back will be important. He has a lot of experience, he is a good leader on the pitch while Victor`s ability to hold the ball up will be a big positive for us.’

Former Manchester United and Everton midfielder Gibson went on to say he was hopeful they can return in time for the meeting with Watford this weekend as the Sunderland look to record a much needed three points.

He also said his old Everton teammate Anichebe can be ‘unplayable’ when at his best.

‘Hopefully we can get them back after the international break and things will start going our way. He can be unplayable when he is on form so hopefully he comes back from America and is flying.’
