Emanuele Giaccherini has insisted that he is with Sunderland for the long haul and is more than willing to fight for his place in the first team.

The Italian has fallen down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light, mainly due to the form of Fabio Borini and Adam Johnson who have been putting in good displays since the turn of the year.

But Giaccherini is hoping that he can fight his way back into the side and stay with Sunderland rather than leave the club and he is willing to bide his time.

Speaking to the Gazette, he said:‘I want to stay here, I’m happy here. The gaffer has to do what he thinks is right, and choose the best team.

‘It’s important that I train well and make the most of my chance when he asks me to start. Borini and Johnson have both been playing well too. The important thing is Sunderland, not me.’

The 28 year old has made 25 appearances for the Black Cats since joining from Juventus in the summer. He has scored three goals with the last of them coming back in September in a 3-1 defeat at home to Liverpool.
